Big6 Frequently Asked Questions

This page contains a compiled list of Frequently Asked Questions about The Big6 Grand Prix Series. This list, surely will not cover every question or concern you may have. If you have not found an answer to your question here or within the website we encourage you to use our Contact Us Page and a representative of Big6Racing.com will get back to you ASAP.

What is a Grand Prix?

A Grand Prix event is a closed course event that includes both natural and graded terrain. In other words, parts of the course are run on a motocross style track and parts of the course are run on natural or desert terrain.

Do you have to be a member of District 37 or AMA to compete?

To compete in District 37 Big6 Grand Prix events you must be a member of the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) and District 37. If you are not a member you can apply for membership at the event. For more information see our Membership Page.

If my child (under 18) goes to the races with a friend what will they need to race?

In order for minors who are not with their parents to participate they will need the following

  • Minor Release Form
  • AMA Membership
  • District 37 Membership
  • Medical Information in case of injury

AMA and District 37 Membership can be obtained at sign up at the event. You can download the Minor Release Form from our downloads section.

How do I get started in Big6 Racing?

It's easier than you think, all you really need to do is show up, sign-up and race! When you get to the track, you will typically pay a gate fee (varies depending on venue) for each person in your group. You will also pay your race entry fee and have to become an AMA and District 37 member. We use an electronic scoring system and you will be required to purchase a transponder. At sign up you will be given temporary numbers that are to be placed on your bike for each class you sign up for. Then all you have to do is show up at the start line for your race. Remember to be safe and ride smart.

What safety gear is required?

All riders must have a helmet, goggles, gloves, pants, long-sleeve shirt and boots that go over the ankles. Chest protectors are not required but are recommended. ATVs must have a tether cord kill switch, Nerf bars are not required for ATVs but its a great piece of safety equipment.

What class should I compete in?

This depends on your age and riding ability, and your machine's engine size. There are seveal classes and skill levels to compete in. Please be sure to sign up in the appropriate skill level ie; beginner, novice, amatuer, expert etc. for your riding ability. This ensures that you will be riding against competitors of your same skill level and not getting in the way of faster riders and becoming a potential hazard. Below is the list of available classes.

How is the course marked?

Big6 Grand Prix events are marked with day-glo ribbon, arrows, and cards. The ribbon marks the course. The arrows mark direction changes and indicate speed changes. Arrows pointing to either the right or left indicate direction. Arrows pointing down mean slow down. Orange day-glo cards indicate danger. Orange day-glo cards with an "X" marking indicate a road crossing.

Can I practice the course?

In short the answer is NO. Due to amount of riders and classes in The Big6 Grand Prix Series it wouldn't be feasable to have practice sessions. However, there is an Unclassified race first thing each day that many competitors will enter as a way to familiarize themselves with the course.

Can I Pre-Enter and Event?

Yes we do have Pre-Entry available both online through XTRM Motorsports Network and Downloadable Mail-in Entry forms both available from the Event Round Pages. Be sure to check the Event Round page and/or event flyer for pre-entry dates.

How long is each Big6 race/course?

This depends on the class you enter at the event, varying from 30 minutes in the 50cc class to 120 minutes in the Pro MC. Courses vary in length from 3-10 miles.

What is a typical start like?

Depending on the club a typical Big6 Grand Prix start is a dead engine muliti-row flagged start. What this means is that competitors are lined up in multiple rows of approximately 30 riders with engines off and when the flag man drops the flag, the first row leaves the start. Succesive rows leave in 30 second increments.

Other types of starts that may be used are as follows

  • Live engine, flagged start
  • Hand on helmet, flagged start
  • Le Mans start
  • Straddle front fender

Do I have to have a spark arrestor?

Depending on the venue, spark arrestors may or may not be required. Please see the event flyer or round information page for details. It wouldn't hurt to run a spark arrestor at all events.

Do I have to purchase a transponder?

Yes, transponders are required for our electronic scoring system. Transponders are available at sign-up.

Do you accept checks or credit cards?

Generally all payments are to be made in cash or money order only. In some cases it is up to the sign up team whether they will accept other forms of payment such as credit card or check.

Where and When are Event Results posted?

Event results will be posted in the Results section and available for download. Results are usually posted within the following week of an event.
